The first reliable data on the oldest history is found in ancient Greek travel and seafarers. Skilaks Kariandonski (4th century BC) in his geographical writings provides us with even better knowledge of the Liburnian islands, including Rab. Several Greek and Roman geographers mention in their geographical writings an island that is supposed to be Rab. In these files Rab is mentioned under the name Arba. The root of this name comes most likely from the Illyrian liburn, the oldest inhabitants of Rab for whom history knows. In fact, in the position of the present-day town of Rab there was an Illyrian-Liburnian pre-Rim settlement called Arba by illyrian liburnians. It is difficult to determine how old the name Arba is but it occurs at the latest since the beginning of the Iron Age since the remains of the settlement were mainly known, since the Illyrian liburnians did not build towns and fortifications. In fact, liburnian-Illyrian Arb, meaning dark, green, forested, so the name Arba should be understood as a toponym that had the meaning of "Black Island" probably because of the coniferous forests of which there were once many on the island. From 1 October 2016, the um It was mentioned in several Greek and Roman writers under the name Arba, Arva. In medieval Latin documents we find the name Arbe, Arbia, Arbiana, Arbitana and most often Arbum. In the spirit of their language, The Slavic Croats converted Arba into Rab probably as early as the 7th century. In the 19th century, I.e. after the arrival of the first Slavs on the island. The oldest known file to date, in which we find the Croatian name Rab, is the Latin document of the foundation of the Rab Franciscan monastery of St. Peter. The euphemisms of the half-15. St.
In its historical development Rab is a markedly closed island, so CROATS come to the island slower and later than on other islands of the northern Adriatic, which is why no settlement on Rab has a Croatian name, which is the result of the slow and late infiltration of Croatian livelies on the island. In addition, there are no previous Glagolitic monuments on Rab that appear on Krk and Cres. Most of the Rab nobles (otherwise very conservative and closed and in their social environment were very difficult) came from Venice or nearby Italian cities: Galzigna, Spalatin, Zudenigo, Dominis, Cernotta, Nimira...
